How does calibration compliance work in Saudi Arabia?

Saudi Arabia is where buyers most often name the wrong body, so it is worth getting straight. SAAC — the Saudi Accreditation Center — is the official government body accrediting laboratories, inspection bodies and certification bodies in the Kingdom, and is recognised as Saudi Arabia's national accreditation body. GAC, the GCC Accreditation Center, is a regional Gulf body that also accredits calibration laboratories. SASO is neither: established in 1972 and affiliated with the Minister of Commerce, it owns standards and the national metrology system. Oil and gas, petrochemicals, construction materials testing and the fast-growing Vision 2030 manufacturing base are all assessed on measuring-equipment control.

SAAC is the national accreditation body — not SASO

This is the correction worth making first, because plenty of consultant sites get it wrong. SAAC, the Saudi Accreditation Center, is an official Saudi government body that accredits laboratories, inspection bodies, certification bodies and halal certification bodies, and it is recognised as the Kingdom's national accreditation body, having obtained ILAC recognition in 2021. SASO is a stakeholder alongside the Ministry of Commerce, not the accreditor. When you file a certificate, record which body accredited the laboratory and the scope it covers.

GAC: the regional Gulf route

Calibration laboratories in the Kingdom may also hold accreditation from the GCC Accreditation Center, a regional body serving Gulf Cooperation Council states rather than Saudi Arabia alone. GAC accredits calibration laboratories to ISO/IEC 17025:2017 and announced achieving the IAF Multilateral Recognition Arrangement in December 2024. Practical consequence: two logos, both legitimate, so judge a certificate on the accredited scope and the international arrangement behind it rather than on which body issued it.

SASO owns metrology and legal metrology
