How does calibration compliance work in the USA?
There is no single calibration regulator in the USA — your obligation comes from whichever standard your customer or regulator imposes. What they all agree on is traceability: results must link back to national standards through an unbroken chain of comparisons with stated uncertainty, and NIST's own policy is that every calibration or test report must declare its source of traceability. Accredited calibration goes a step further: an accreditation body — A2LA, ANAB or NVLAP — has audited the laboratory to ISO/IEC 17025:2017 and confirmed it is technically competent to make that claim, and those bodies are themselves peer-evaluated through ILAC. Aerospace (AS9100), automotive (IATF 16949), defense and metrology labs (ANSI/NCSL Z540.3) and medical devices (21 CFR Part 820, now the QMSR) each add their own record-keeping rules on top.
"NIST-traceable" vs accredited — not the same thing
A NIST-traceable calibration means the measurement links back to national standards with stated uncertainty. An accredited calibration means A2LA, ANAB or NVLAP has assessed that laboratory against ISO/IEC 17025:2017. Accreditation covers the lab's capability, not any single result — which is why a NIST test-report number on a certificate proves nothing on its own. Z540.3 §5.3(b) is stricter than a due-date calendar: where calibration verifies that quantities are within tolerance, the probability of a false-accept decision shall not exceed 2% and shall be documented — and where estimating that is not practicable, the test uncertainty ratio (TUR) shall be at least 4:1. The analysis has to exist before the calibration, so your records need to hold the tolerance, the standard used and its uncertainty, not just a pass/fail.
Medical devices: Part 820 is now the QMSR
Since 2 February 2026, 21 CFR Part 820 is the Quality Management System Regulation and incorporates ISO 13485:2016 by reference, with FDA inspecting under Compliance Program 7382.850.
